Self Select in Nairobi 2009

Self Select in Nairobi 2009

In Self Select, Yoshinari Nishio walked along streets in Nairobi, and asked passers-by in Swahili to exchange clothes with him. A costume that is unique to a certain group is more important than language as a criterion to distinguish ’us’ from ’them’. Using his own methodology, he tried to manoeuvre the way that communication is formed and evolved in the contemporary urban society where people with different cultures and personalities intermingle. The result of his experiment was exhibited in a popular restaurant, and featured on Kenyan televisions, newspapers.
